Science
At Manor Abbey, our Science curriculum is designed to inspire curiosity, develop scientific thinking and help pupils understand the world around them. Pupils build their knowledge and practical skills through a carefully sequenced curriculum covering Biology, Chemistry and Physics, with learning adapted to ensure that every pupil can engage, make progress and experience success. Science is taught through a combination of explicit teaching, practical investigation, discussion and real-world application, enabling pupils to develop confidence as well as the skills to question, investigate and draw conclusions. As pupils progress through the school, their Science pathway is shaped by their individual strengths, aspirations and intended future destinations. We are able to offer a range of appropriate Science qualifications, allowing each pupil to work towards an outcome that is both ambitious and achievable and which supports their next steps into further education, training or employment.
Maths
At Manor Abbey, our Maths curriculum is designed to develop confident, capable learners who can use mathematics successfully both in school and in everyday life. Alongside developing pupils’ knowledge and understanding of number, calculation, shape, measure, statistics and problem solving, we place a strong emphasis on the practical mathematical skills needed for adulthood and independence. Pupils learn to apply Maths to meaningful situations such as managing money, budgeting, understanding wages and bills, shopping, cooking, measuring and making informed financial decisions – helping them develop the skills needed to manage a successful and independent home life. Teaching is carefully sequenced and adapted to pupils’ individual starting points, allowing them to build confidence, experience success and make meaningful progress. As pupils move through the school, those for whom it is an appropriate pathway have the opportunity to work towards GCSE Mathematics, ensuring that academic ambition is balanced with the development of the essential mathematical skills pupils will need for their future lives.
English
At Manor Abbey, our English curriculum is designed to develop confident readers, writers and communicators, equipping pupils with the skills they need to succeed both in education and in everyday life. Pupils experience a broad range of engaging texts and develop their skills in reading, writing, speaking and listening, with teaching carefully sequenced and adapted to individual starting points and needs. Alongside academic learning, we place a strong emphasis on English as a skill for life, developing the practical literacy and communication skills pupils need to navigate adulthood successfully, from understanding information and completing forms to writing emails, communicating effectively and expressing their ideas with confidence. As pupils progress through the school, we offer qualification pathways from Entry Level through to GCSE, enabling pupils to work towards qualifications that reflect their individual abilities, aspirations and future destinations. Our aim is for every pupil to leave Manor Abbey with the confidence, communication skills and literacy they need for further education, employment and independent adult life.
PHSE
At Manor Abbey, our PSHE curriculum follows the National Curriculum and statutory guidance, while being carefully tailored to meet the individual needs, experiences and developmental stages of our pupils. Our school values – Be Safe, Be Kind, Be Resilient and Be Ambitious – are embedded throughout PSHE, helping pupils to build positive relationships, make informed choices and develop confidence and independence. Through learning about relationships, health and wellbeing, personal safety, financial awareness and preparation for adulthood, we equip pupils with the knowledge and practical skills they need to navigate everyday life safely and successfully and prepare for their future beyond Manor Abbey.
IT
At Manor Abbey, our IT curriculum develops the knowledge, skills and confidence pupils need to use technology effectively, safely and independently. Learning is built around key areas including digital literacy, information technology, computer science, data, digital creativity and online safety, with teaching carefully tailored to pupils’ individual needs and starting points. We place a strong emphasis on IT skills for life, ensuring pupils can use technology for practical everyday purposes, further education and future employment, including communicating by email, creating documents, accessing information and services online and using digital tools confidently and responsibly. As pupils progress through the school, they also have opportunities to develop more advanced IT knowledge and work towards appropriate qualifications, supporting their individual aspirations and future destinations.
